With the encouragement of longtime loyal Democrats in Elkhart County, a core Nappanee–Wakarusa group met first by zoom and then on the back lawn of a home in Nappanee in spring/summer 2020. By November 2020, we had by-laws in place and became an official City Club under the umbrella of the Elkhart County Democratic Party.
Throughout 2020 we conducted candidate forums and organized literature drops for Biden and state/local candidates. In 2021, as the Covid pandemic deepened, we conducted well-attended zoom meetings on a variety of social justice and health-oriented topics; these recordings are still able to review on our YouTube channel, set up by our election-year intern Rose Goyette.
In the following years, we made these important steps forward:
- First Dems on the ballot in 2022 for local Township offices
- First Dems on the ballot in 2023 for Town/Village Council in Nappanee and Wakarusa – triggering the first municipal elections here in more than 10 years
- First candidate forums by League of Women Voters to be held in 2023 in our area
- Forums on Biden’s programs sponsored by INDEMS and held in Nappanee
- Lots of publicity, making it easy for anyone interested in joining a Democratic organization in our area to find ACT and the Elkhart County Democratic Party
Our intent is to keep building opportunities for Democratic, independent, and progressive voters in the area to contribute to democracy by having a voice and presence. Join us!
